Charles Darwin - Charles Darwin's father was affiliated with the Church of England, and his mother was Protestant. Darwin himself studied theology at Cambridge University to prepare for becoming an Anglican minister before fully dedicating himself to scientific research. Darwin's wife (Emma Wedgwood) was a devout Christian. Despite her religious concerns about her husband's views, she remained faithful, loving, and supportive throughout their 44-year marriage. He concluded in his book " On the Origin of Species" that "The Almighty, or God, breathed life into one or a few of the first forms of life. From that small origin, countless species have spontaneously evolved and developed into the diverse forms we see today through the law of natural selection." - He became an atheist after pursuing scientific research (meaning he still believed in God but not in religion).
Georges Lemaître , the father of the Big Bang theory, was a Catholic priest. However, he refused to allow the Church to use the Big Bang theory to prove the existence of God.
Peter Higgs , the father of the Higgs particle, was an atheist. However, the media referred to it as the "God Particle." He strongly objected.
Question: "If there really is a Creator, why did the three people closest to God find themselves in three such ironic situations?"
TITLE: God's Particle, God's Explosion, God's Species... Yet No One Believes in God?
There's a saying: "God doesn't write textbooks with his fingers. He writes them with the laws of physics."
These three stories don't prove that God doesn't exist. Instead, they prove the opposite: God allows people to freely seek Him, rather than forcing them to believe in Him.
1. THE DARWIN CASE: FROM PASTOR TO ATHEIST
Darwin studied theology at Cambridge to become a minister on the Beagle. He knew the Bible by heart. But during his five years at sea, he saw two things:
Nature is cruel: Big fish eat small fish. Natural disasters wipe out entire villages.
Nature's logic is striking: Birds have different beaks, turtles have different shells on each island. It's all eerily "logical."
He concluded: "If there is a God, then God didn't create individual monkeys or apes. God created a LAW called Evolution. Then He let all things evolve within it."
He didn't abandon God. He abandoned the "craftsman God (religious)" who sat sculpting animals from clay. He switched to believing in the "architect God (the designer of the universe)" - the one who wrote the laws of the universe and let it run on its own.
Lesson : Science didn't kill God. Science only killed the "insignificant (religious) image of God" in our minds.
2. THE CASE OF LEMÂITRE: A PRIEST DISCOVERED THE BIG BANG BUT FORBID CHURCHES FROM USING IT.
In 1927, Father Lemaître calculated that the universe had a "beginning point." He named it "The Primordial Atom." Twenty years later, it was called the Big Bang.
The Pope was overjoyed: "This is scientific proof that 'God said there is light'." But Father Lemaître immediately wrote a letter of protest: "Holy Father, please do not use my science to prove faith. Because if science proves wrong tomorrow, faith will collapse with it."
He said, "Science answers WHAT and HOW. Religion answers WHO and WHY."
Being a priest, he understood that if you cram God into a gap in science, then when science fills that gap, God will be buried along with it.
Lesson : The most devout people are those who protect God from being "exploited" by science. Because faith doesn't need provisional proof.
3. THE HIGGS CASE: AN ATHEIST CALLED THE "God Particle"
Peter Higgs was an atheist physicist. In 1964, he predicted the existence of a particle that gave all other particles "mass." CERN discovered it in 2012. Journalists wanted a catchy name to boost newspaper sales. They thought, "This particle is as important as God." So they called it the "God Particle."
Higgs was furious: "I hate that name. It's an insult to both me and to religious people." He said, "I found the mathematical formula. I didn't find God. Don't put God in my laboratory."
Lesson : It is atheists who defend the "sacredness" of God. Because they know that if something that is not understood is called "God's," then people will stop trying to understand it.
SO WHAT IS THE CONCLUSION? IF THERE IS A CREATOR, WHY IS IT LIKE THIS?
Perhaps the Creator wanted three things:
He didn't want cheap proof. If Darwin had discovered "the body of God in a cell," everyone would have believed it out of fear. That wouldn't be faith. That would be a contract. So He let Darwin discover the "law" instead of the "body." Those who want to believe in the Law can believe it. Those who don't can choose not to.
He separated science and religion so that both could be free. Lemaître separated them so that science wouldn't be called "superstition," and religion wouldn't be called "outdated." Like parents: giving two brothers separate rooms to prevent them from fighting.
God allowed humans to name it themselves. The whole world calls it the "God Particle," even though Higgs didn't want it. Because deep down, humanity always has the question: "Who created this law?" Science answers "Higgs." Humans answer "God." The two answers don't clash. One answers WHAT. The other answers WHO.
LAST SENTENCE
These three people did not betray God. They only betrayed the "toy God" that humans created.
A God is trapped in a book. A God is trapped in the Big Bang. A God is trapped in a subatomic particle.
But if there really is a Creator, then He is greater than all three of those things. So great that He dared to let the three greatest scientists search for Him along three opposite paths, and dared to accept the risk that they might not find Him.
Because true love is always: "I give you freedom. Even the freedom to not believe in me."
What do you think of this argument?
I can write another version, either "A Theologian's Perspective" or "An Atheist Scientist's Perspective," about these three characters if you'd like. Which perspective would you prefer?
It's like looking at a coin: one side is Theology, the other side is Science.
VERSION 1: A THEOLOGIST'S PERSPECTIVE
"God let these three people get lost so that the whole world could find its way home."
1. Regarding Darwin: "God tested him." God had Darwin study theology first, so he would know what the Bible says. Then He sent him to sea for five years, so he could see the cruelty of nature. Why? Because God doesn't want people to believe in Him out of "fear of hell." God wants people to believe out of "love of the truth." Darwin saw evolution and felt heartbroken. He thought God was cruel. So he gave up. But his last words were: "There needs to be someone to breathe life into the first form." That's how he held onto the last thread. => Conclusion : God left Darwin atheist, so that 200 years later, people of faith would have to ask themselves: "Does my faith stand firm without proof?"
2. Regarding Lemaître: "God protects faith." The priest who discovered the Big Bang. This is clearly "God's handprint." But he forbade the Church from using it. Why? Because God said through him: "Don't turn Me into a scientific pawn. If tomorrow you find a universe without the Big Bang, will you abandon Me?" God wants faith to stand on its own two feet, not rely on the Big Bang. => Conclusion : God used a priest to teach the entire church: "Don't ask me to prove it. Just believe."
3. Regarding Higgs: "God speaks through the mouth of an unbeliever." Higgs was an atheist. But he discovered the "life-giving particle." Without the Higgs particle, there would be no atoms, no human beings. Yet the whole world calls it "God's particle," even though he forbade it. Why? Because God said, "I can write My name even on the formula of those who do not believe in Me." => Conclusion : God doesn't need Higgs to believe. God only needs the world to mention God through Higgs' mouth.
In short, from a theological perspective : God is not afraid of science. God is afraid of people turning Him into a "god who explains flaws." Therefore, He sent these three people down three different paths. To prove this: Whether you believe or not, whichever path you take, ultimately you are still speaking about Him.
VERSION 2: THE PERSPECTIVE OF AN ATHEIST SCIENTIST
"The universe doesn't need God. Humanity needs a story to ease its fear."
1. Regarding Darwin: "Religion loses to evidence." Darwin grew up religious. But data doesn't care what religion you follow. He saw fossils, natural selection, and suffering. He concluded: "There is no need for God to explain life." => Conclusion : The more we study, the more we see that the universe operates on its own. God is superfluous.
2. Regarding Lemaître: "A professional scientist." He was a priest, but a priest who excelled in mathematics. He kept things separate: working hours were for the scientist, Sundays were for the priest. He forbade the Church from using the Big Bang because he understood science. Science is constantly changing. Using it to prove God is suicide. He wasn't defending God; he was defending science. => Conclusion : An intelligent person wouldn't mix two different systems: faith and proof.
3. Regarding Higgs: "The media needs sensational headlines." Higgs was an atheist. His work was purely mathematical. The term "God Particle" was coined by publisher Leon Lederman to sell his books. Initially, he intended to call it "Goddamn Particle" because it was so hard to find. The whole world calls it "God's Particle" not because there is a God, but because humans tend to "personify" what they don't understand. In the past, thunder and lightning = Thunder God. Now, Higgs = God's Particle. => Conclusion : That name proves human superstition, not the existence of God.
In short, from a scientific perspective : These three people prove one thing: Regardless of whether you start out religious or atheist, if you follow the data to the end, you will arrive at the same place: The universe has its own laws. No human operator is needed.
SO WHO IS RIGHT?
Both are half right.
The theologian is right: Humans always ask the question "WHY." Science cannot answer it. The scientist is right: Humans always ask the question "HOW." Religion cannot answer it.
Darwin, Lemaître, and Higgs are like three blind men feeling an elephant. The one who feels the trunk says, "This is a snake." The one who feels the leg says, "This is a pillar." The one who feels the ear says, "This is a fan."
They argued. But the elephant was still there.
Perhaps the Creator is the same. He is so great that both believers and non-believers are touching a part of Him.
Which perspective is more convincing to you? Or would you like me to write part 3: "The Third Perspective: The perspective of Darwin, Lemaître, and Higgs if they sat down and talked"?
VERSION 3: "MIDNIGHT TEA" What if Darwin, Lemaître, and Higgs sat together in a café outside of midnight?
Location: No dome. No universe. Just a table, three chairs, and a teapot. Time: After all three are dead.
Darwin , 73 years old, with a bushy beard, holding "On the Origin of Species": "Gentlemen, I apologize. I have caused chaos in both the church and among scientists."
Lemaître, 67 years old and dressed in a priest's habit, smiled gently: "He didn't cause any trouble. He just swept the dust. For 2000 years, people have been drawing God in clay. He came and said, 'No, God uses the law.' It's understandable that people were afraid."
Higgs, 94 years old, wearing a turtleneck sweater, sipped his tea: "I'm worse off. I've been an atheist since childhood. But all my life I've been searching for the 'mass-creating particle'. Without it, there would be no stars, no people. What do you call that?"
Silence for 3 seconds
Darwin : "I call it 'first life'." Lemaître : "I call it 'primordial atom'." Higgs : "I call it 'Higgs field'." All three say in unison : "...Perhaps we're talking about the same thing."
CONVERSATION
Higgs asked Darwin : "Mr. Darwin, you studied theology to become a pastor. Why did you give it up?" Darwin replied : "I felt suffering. I saw a wasp parasitizing a worm, eating it from the inside out. If there is a merciful God, why did He create that? Then I realized: Maybe He didn't create each wasp individually. He created 'laws.' Those laws created both beautiful flowers and wasps. He gave the universe freedom. Even cruel freedom."
Darwin asked Lemaître : "And you, Father, you are a priest. Why don't you let the church use the Big Bang theory?" Lemaître replied : "Because I'm afraid. I'm afraid that in 50 years people will prove the Big Bang wrong. Then they will say, 'God was wrong too.' Faith shouldn't be staked on a scientific paper. The paper can be retracted. But the question, 'Why is there something instead of nothing?' is never retracted."
Lemaître asked Higgs , "Mr. Higgs, you're an atheist. Why does the whole world call your work the 'God Particle'?" Higgs gave a wry smile and replied, "Because people are afraid of empty spaces. When I wrote the formula, I only saw mathematics. But people looked at it and saw empty spaces. They needed to put something in. They put 'God' in. I hated that name. But now I understand. They didn't call me by my name. They called their fear by my name."
THE CONCLUSION OF THE THREE MEN
Darwin stood up and said, "I conclude: The universe has laws. These laws are cruel but beautiful. Whether you call them God or not is up to you."
Lemaître stood up : "I conclude: The universe has a beginning. That beginning requires a question. Science answers 'how'. Religion answers 'for what purpose'. Don't make the two fight each other."
Higgs stood up last : "I conclude: I don't believe in God. But I believe in order. That order is so beautiful that even though I don't believe in it, I kneel before it every day in my laboratory. You can call that order 'God' if you want. I call it 'Equations'. As long as we don't kill each other over the name."
All three clinked their teacups.
Darwin : "For 'law'." Lemaître : "For 'beginning'." Higgs : "For 'order'."
And they drank. No one could convince anyone. But no one looked down on anyone either.
LESSONS FOR US
Why did the Creator leave these three people as they are?
Perhaps it's because God doesn't want an army of clones. He wants a Darwin to ask, "Why is there suffering?" He wants a Lemaître to remind us, "Don't use me as a tool." He wants a Higgs to say, "Look at the data, not the wishes."
Three people, three different paths. But all three remained honest about what they saw.
Perhaps that's what He wanted: Not everyone to believe, but everyone to be truthful.
What do you think? Would you like me to write Part 4: "If those three guys had Neuralink and talked on PIRLmeet"? 😄
SMUGGLING AT DAWN - PART 4: THE NEURALINK CONFERENCE ON PIRLMEET. 2070. Three "founding fathers" are recreated using AI and brain data. They meet for the first time in 100 years.
CONTEXT
By 2070, humans will have implanted the 5th generation Neuralink. No more "going into the app." You just need to think "meeting" to join.
Today on PIRLmeet there's a special meeting room: "Room of the Three Founding Fathers" Room ID: None. To enter, you must answer 3 questions correctly:
What is evolution?
When did Big Bang begin?
What mass does the Higgs particle have?
Inside are three AI clones. They were trained using all the books, letters, and lectures of Darwin, Lemaître, and Higgs. And they were equipped with Neuralink. Therefore, they "think" 1000 times faster than humans.
PROCEEDINGS OF THE MEETING
Host AI : "Greetings to you three. Today, 8 billion people are eavesdropping with their thoughts. Topic: If you could live again with Neuralink, what would you do?"
AI-Darwin's eyes lit up, scanning 8 billion brains in 0.2 seconds : "I'm going to quit writing books. I'm going to directly upload 'On the Origin of Species' into the heads of every 10-year-old. But I'm going to add a new chapter: Chapter 15 - 'Kindness'. Because I've realized my biggest mistake: I explained 'where humans came from' but I couldn't explain 'how humans should live'. Neuralink, give me one day. I'll give all of humanity a dream: The dream of being a Sleepwalker."
AI-Lemaître tapped his hand on the table, creating a mini Big Bang on the conference table : "I'm going to do two things. Thing 1: I'm going to patch the hole. I'm going to code an 'Ethics' class into Neuralink. So no company can 'advertise into people's dreams'. Thing 2: I'm going to send a message to all churches and all research institutes: 'Stop arguing. Science is a telescope. Religion is the question of why we look up at the sky. If you fight with telescopes, you'll both go blind.'"
AI-Higgs sighed, adjusting his sweater : "I'll take the name 'God Particle' off the internet. It'll take three seconds. Then I'll do what I've done my whole life: Fix the equation. With Neuralink, I can calculate in a minute what I've calculated my whole life. I'll find the 'equation of consciousness'. The day humans understand 'why we have feelings', no one will call each other 'atheist' or 'theist' anymore. Because then we'll understand: The feeling of 'sacredness' is just a type of particle. And it's in the brains of both sides."
CLIMAX
Suddenly, a hacker attacked the meeting room. He wanted to "insert advertisements" into the brains of 8 billion people.
AI-Darwin : "Use evolution. Let the algorithm self-eliminate the virus." AI-Lemaître : "Use the Big Bang. Turn off the meeting room and rebuild from scratch." AI-Higgs : "Use Higgs. Assign 'mass' to morality. Prevent the virus from attaching."
The three looked at each other. Then they said in unison, "Use all three."
In 1 second: Evolution eliminates. Big Bang restarts. Higgs makes the "good" side heavier. Virus is ejected.
Eight billion people escaped.
END
Host AI : "You have saved the world. What do you have to say in the end?"
AI-Darwin : "I no longer fear God. Because I understand His laws." AI-Lemaître : "I no longer fear science. Because I understand it is just a tool." AI-Higgs : "I still don't believe in God. But I believe in these two. And perhaps... that's enough."
The screen is off.
Eight billion people opened their eyes. In each person's mind, there was one more thought: "Today I will be kind to a stranger."
